{rootin’ tutin’ thursday} faux churros

Pull out your cinnamon sticks and sugar scoops ‘cuz it’s a tasty…

Earlier today I shared the ¡Fiesta! we had when my family was visiting. If you missed it, click here for all the details. Growing up, a spicy night at our family table included canned tomatoes, tomato paste and a pinch of chili powder. International fare including taco nights were few and far between so my recipe book was a bit sparse when it came to making a Mexican dessert! I love authentic and Americanized south-of-the-border desserts so I decided to make my version of a churro or Taco Bell’s Cinnamon Twists—Faux Churros!

  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Refridgerated Ready-to-Bake Breadsticks
  • Spray Butter (not shown) or Melted Butter
  • Spoon
  • Plastic Container-n-Lid or Bowl
  • Cookie Sheet

In a plastic container or bowl, mix equal amounts of sugar and cinnamon. {Adjust to your palette!}

Cover the plastic container and shake or stir the mixture in a bowl.

Open the breadsticks and lay them on the cookie sheet. {I use a Silpat on my cookie sheet for baking.} If you prefer thinner breadsticks, cut each section in half lengthwise.

Spray or brush each breadstick with butter and generously spoon on the cinnamon-sugar mixture.

{For less mess, do the previous step on wax or parchment paper or a plate before transferring to your cookie sheet.}

Twist and pull each breadstick to make it longer then place it on your cookie sheet. {J wanted an action shot so I chose the blurry one!}

Bake the breaksticks according to the package directions. I baked ours at 375° for 10 minutes.

Ta-Da! Faux Churros for your next ¡Fiesta!

I hope you’re inspired to put your own twist on a classic recipe!
