{tipster tuesday} money saving tips

Grab your notebook and a pencil ‘cuz it’s…

Today I wanted to share a few money saving tips I’ve learned over the years when it comes to party planning. When your budget doesn’t have a lot of wiggle room, these simple steps can save you a lot of time, energy and a few bucks, too!

Shop your home first. You’ll be amazed at how many items you can reuse or re-purpose to coordinate with your theme. I purchased inexpensive bamboo cups for my sister’s “Aloha 50” birthday party to create a “Hawaiian” vibe. For the Lumberjack Party, I taped a piece of faux bois paper around them and added twine to create “log” cups.

Do-It-Yourself. If you love the look of an expensive item or just need to save your pennies, try making it yourself. I’m not a great seamstress but I was able to sew a tablecloth, table runner, paper garland and fleece hats. If you’re not savvy with a sewing machine, you can use iron-on hem tape to finish raw edges.

Start at your local grocery store. Supermarkets and big box stores now offer so many amazing products and services. Due to a busy schedule, I forgot to order a cake from our favorite bakery and was thrilled to find the perfect cake for less than $4 at my grocery store. You can make it extra special by embellishing it yourself. I embellished the “log” cake with candy leftover from filling the favor boxes.

Be flexible. Even when you plan ahead, you can’t always find exactly what you hoped for. When shopping for fabric to make the Lumberjack hats, I couldn’t find lumberjack plaid (aka buffalo plaid) in fleece but I did find it in flannel. Instead of making the hat completely out of plaid fleece, I used solid red or solid black fleece and accented the ear flaps with lumberjack plaid flannel.

The hats turned out really cute and are worn around the PiG PeN outdoors quite often! {giggle} You can find the fleece hat tutorial here. The flannel remnants came in handy, too. I cut them into strips and embellished the gable boxes with them which I couldn’t have done as easily with the fleece.

I hope you’re inspired to save a few pennies on your next party!
