{the crew} introducing…maria lopez davis!

I had every intention of posting this earlier today before J and I headed to a Family Reunion. We ended up leaving 5 hours later than planned and the 6 hour trip turned into NINE! So I’m sitting in our hotel room while the rest of the family is sleeping because I couldn’t wait for you to meet the next member of the Piggy Bank Parties Crew!

Introducing Maria Lopez Davis of Love & Sugar Kisses

I “officially” met Maria when she applied to be a contributing writer here on Oink! but I was already a fan of hers before that. My admiration started when I saw spotted the adorable cake that she created for her daughter’s birthday party. Here are two of my favorite parts of that cake…

I LoVe the brown spot around the puppy’s eye and the lil’ birthday candle! Then the puppy eating his way through the cake—AdoraBle! I’m so excited to have an up-and-coming cake artist on the Crew! Maria’s excitement about being a part of our team is infectious and she shared with us a little bit of her background…

“I’m a stay at home mom of 2 beautiful, bright & opinionated girls…a 5 year old and 2 ½ year old (both going on 15). I have been married to my incredibly loving and supportive husband for 8 years. I love to decorate cakes, bake (anything & everything with sugar), plan parties for my girls and make crafts for my home. I do everything on a major BUDGET, but I like things to feel “special” and if that means making every detail myself, then that’s what I do and I LOVE it!! I’m not good with sitting still EVER and always seem to have many irons in the fire. I’m happiest when I’m DOING and I love doing things to put a smile on the faces of the people I care about! I have a tendency to overuse the words AWESOME and FABULOUS and am a bit too liberal with my use of exclamation marks!! I believe that life is truly for the LIVING!”

I knew Maria was a great fit for the Crew when she admitted something that this lil’ piggy struggles with. We are both self-proclaimed over-users of exclamation marks!!!! In addition to the exclamation mark, I love quirky facts about people…so here are Maria’s answers to my questions…

Do you do this as a full- or part-time job or is it just for fun? This is primarily for fun! I do decorate cakes for profit, but it is only on a very limited basis outside of the ones I do for family and friends. I would like to grow an “at home business” in the near future.

How did you get started? I’ve dabbled in cake decorating and crafting over the years, but really got into it 5 years ago when my first daughter was born. I wanted to throw her cute parties and make her fun cakes so that’s what I try to do!

What is your favorite taste (salty, sweet, sour, tangy, etc.)? SWEET…SWEEEEEEEEEEEET! The word “sugar” is in my blog name for a reason.

Do you prefer cupcakes, cake or cookies at a birthday party? While I won’t ever turn my nose up to ANY sweet treat, my greatest love is for cakes and I prefer them over everything else.

What is your favorite decoration (streamers, balloons, poms, etc.)? It’s probably the child in me, but I love balloons. I really think that even if there aren’t a ton of other decorations, balloons always say PARTY!

What is your favorite color combination? Aqua/turquoise is my favorite color in the world (I’m so happy it’s IN right now)!!! But for combos, I really love shades of pink and shades of blue together.

What are your 3 favorite penny pinching tips? DIY DIY DIY…wait that’s just one! But seriously…

  1. Making as much as possible yourself.
  2. Planning your theme (or at least colors) in advance so you can take advantage of great deals when you see them.
  3. Looking around your home to find everyday objects that can be creatively used for decorations (i.e.: decorate clear jars that you fill with coordinating goodies).

Why did you want to join the Piggy Bank Parties Crew on Oink!? I’m a little bitty fish in the great big ocean of craft and party blogging and I want to show other itty bitty fish out there that you can do fabulous things on a budget!

Maria has mentioned several times to me that she’s a small fish on our Crew but I think you’ll agree that she can swim with the best of them! Maria also shared FIVE favorite things that she has created…

Make sure you head over to Maria’s Flickr page to see all of her amazing cakes. Here are two of her cakes that I adore

  1. Maria, the dog cake is adorable, but my favorite is the wreath made with stick on bows! I was such a simple idea and yet looked almost like a wreath of hydrangeas!

    Thanks, Dort (Do’s big sis)
