  • Christmas Tree Lot Lights Free Download
  • Adobe Reader (free at www.adobe.com)
  • Color Printer
  • Bright White Lightweight Cardstock or Brochure & Flyer Paper
  • Scissors or 1″ Circle Punch
  • 1/16″ or 1/8″ Hole Punch
  • Twine, String or Floss
  • Straws
  • Poster Putty
  • Quarters or 1″ Washers

1. DOWNLOAD AND PRINT THE LIGHTS

To keep these lightweight, I printed the free download on Brochure & Flyer Paper. It’s sturdier than standard printer paper and made for printing colorful artwork. You can also use a lightweight cardstock or matte photo paper.

2. CUT OR PUNCH OUT THE LIGHTS

I used a 1″ circle punch, but hand-cut lights are perfect for this Charlie Brown inspired tree lot. Get the kids involved with the cutting for a true Charlie Brown look!

3. PUNCH 2 HOLES IN THE LIGHT BULBS

Punch 2 holes at the top of each light bulb. If you’re setting up your tree lot against a wall or backdrop, you can string the lights and hang them using clear tape. However, the tree lot light poles make it look and feel like an authentic tree lot.

4. PUNCH A HOLE IN EACH STRAW

Pinch the straw at one end and punch a hole. This will allow you to thread your twine through both sides of the straw. I used milkshake straws which are wider than standard straws, but standard straws will work great for this project, too.

5. MEASURE AND CUT THE LIGHT STRING

Depending on where you’ll be displaying the tree lot, you will need to make the light string long enough to go the width of your tree lot plus an extra 12″. My tree lot was 31″ wide so I cut a piece of string 48″ long. It’s better to have a little extra than to make it too short.

6. STRING ONE SECTION OF LIGHTS

Starting 6″ from one end of the twine, string 5-6 lights approximately 1/2″ apart.

7. THREAD STRING THROUGH STRAW HOLES

After 5-6 lights, thread the string through the holes of one straw. String 6 more lights then thread the string through another straw. Repeat until you are about 6″ from the end of the twine.

To finish off the ends of the light strand, you can either add another pole and knot the twine or tape the ends to the surface they are sitting on. I chose to tape the ends down and cover them with faux snow.

8. CREATE LIGHT POLE STANDS

I created a quick and easy light pole stand using poster putty and a quarter. You can also use a 1″ washer, but I had an abundance of quarters in my change purse!

Why did I use a quarter? It gives the poster putty enough weight to hold the straw upright. It also gives the putty something to hold onto if you’re setting the light poles on top of fabric.

Smash the poster putty onto the top of the quarter.

Cover the entire top of the quarter with the poster putty.

Stick the straw into the poster putty. Ta-Da! A light pole stand in less than a minute!

When you’re done using the Christmas Tree Lot Lights, the putty easily peels off the quarters.
